1821-Dated Dalhousie University Medal by Birks.
Bronze. 45mm. 43.6g. Plain edge. Appears to be a product of the early to mid 20th century. Although the medal lists 1821 as the year Dalhousie University was founded in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the institution was actually established in 1818. We cannot explain the discrepancy, but it may account for the scarcity of the medal today. A named example in bronze was offered as lot 1628 in Jeffrey Hoare’s June 1996 sale of the Saul Hendler Collection, where it realized $260 — the equivalent of about $430 in 2022.
