Beautifully Engraved 18th Century Copper Love Token.
Struck on a planed-off copper planchet (2.2g) measuring approximately 34mm in diameter. The only readily visible undertype appears in the left obverse field. One side shows a man seated in contemporary clothing, including a coat, hat, and boots, with legs crossed smoking a pipe and reading near a tree. Leaves are in the exergue with a dotted border above, as on the reverse. The other side shows the same man, hat in hand, approaching a woman in dress and head covering. She holds a fan in her left hand. Both figures appear to be frowning, or, at the very least, stern.
It’s unclear what story this token is trying to tell. Perhaps the man has drawn himself seated happily before being let down by the woman. Maybe it depicts the man overcoming his apparent rejection by happily smoking and reading. Either way, this is a beautifully engraved 18th century love token, possibly of Dutch or British origin. It’s only flaw is minor verdigris on each side.
