He had had very good advantages for an education, which he diligently improved. In Toronto he worked as a journeyman until 1848 when he turned to the building business. His first work was the construction of the stone work for Osgoode Hall, and after laid the basement of King’s College. He afterwards erected the Mechanics’ Institute, afterwards the Toronto Public Library. Other accomplishments were the Bank of British North America, Custom House, Examining warehouses, etc. His large slate quarry was on five thousand five hundred acres of land purchased on the Grand Trunk Railway at Melbourne, Quebec. He died on the 3rd January, 1885.
